
Retired CMSgt John R. Alvis, a dedicated serviceman and compassionate caregiver, passed away on May 28, 2026, in Jacksonville, Arkansas, at the age of 75. Born on March 31, 1951, in Decatur, Alabama, John lived a life marked by service to his country and care for others.
John proudly served in the United States Air Force from February 4, 1975, to July 31, 1997. Rising to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, he achieved the distinction of being among the top 1% of enlisted airmen—a testament to his dedication and excellence. Following his retirement from military service after more than two decades of commitment, John pursued a new path of service by returning to college and becoming an Oncology Registered Nurse. In this role, he provided care and comfort to countless individuals during some of t most challenging times.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Amy Alvis; two daughters: Dawn Conley (Kevin) and Randi Garret (John) and one son Robert Alvis (Alyssa); and his cherished grandchildren: Amanda Perez (Adrian) Jocelyn Perez, Baileigh Powell, Reagan Powell Conley, Rene Gates, Riley Gates, Lily Gates, William Conley, Athena Conley; Cody Garrett and Chance Garrett (Kayla), Samuel Moore-Garrett, and Declan Moore-Garrett, Alexander John Alvis and Austin Roberts Alvis. He is also survived by his sister Mary K. Birchler (Bobby), as well as numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. John was deeply loved by many friends who will remember him fondly.
He was predeceased by his parents Milton K. Alvis and Hazel (McCulloch) Alvis; his brother James M. Alvis; and three sisters: Janie Miller, Joyce Harrington, and Linda Morris.
John found joy in visiting the Gibbs farm—a place he held dear-and it has been chosen as one of the locations where some of his ashes will be scattered. The remainder will be taken to Alabama to rest alongside his mother and grandparents.
John R. Alvis leaves behind a legacy of honor through his military service and compassion through his work as an oncology nurse. His memory will forever bring comfort to those who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026, at 11:00 AM at A Natural State Funeral Service in Jacksonville.
