Dr. John Bradley Witherspoon Sr., of Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away peacefully at home on July 21, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, adventure, and deep community connection.

Born on August 19, 1955, in Little Rock to Gayland and Fredonia Witherspoon, John, affectionately known as “Spoon”, spent his childhood living around the world as part of a military family, from Alaska to Taiwan before eventually settling in Arkansas and South Carolina.

He graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1973, attended the University of Arkansas as a proud member of Phi Delta Theta, and earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee.

Dr. Witherspoon practiced optometry in Pine Bluff and Little Rock, where he and Susan opened Witherspoon Optics Gallery. More than an eye doctor, he became a trusted friend to generations of patients, known for his compassion, brilliant wit, unforgettable smile, and remarkable ability to make everyone not only see better but to truly feel seen.

John loved the outdoors and embraced life with enthusiasm. Whether hunting, fishing, boating, watching football, riding his Harley, training English Pointers, reading, listening to music, or sharing stories over a cigar, he found joy in every adventure. His love of music became one of the many gifts he passed on to his children.

Though his later years were challenged by the loss of his son and primary progressive MS, his humor, resilience, and generous spirit never left. His final years became a remarkable season of healing, surrounded by the love of his granddaughter, daughters, former wife, devoted caregivers, and countless lifelong family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, John Bradley “Brad” Witherspoon Jr.; his brother, Barry; his nephew, Gavin; his parents, Gayland and Fredonia; his grandparents; and many cherished family members and beloved dogs.

He is survived by his precious granddaughter, Gayl; his daughters, Brooks (fiancé Frasier) and Sallie (partner Jesse); his former wife and dear friend, Susan; his niece Ashley (husband Jay, daughter Isabella); and countless cousins, nieces, nephews, lifelong friends, former patients, and all those fortunate enough to know him.

The family warmly welcomes loved ones to stop by for a casual visit, to gather as we remember the life of John~

A graveside service and celebration of John’s life will be announced at a later date once arrangements have been finalized.
