Michael “Mike” Shepherd Fox, departed this world on Friday, May 8, 2020, having contracted COVID-19 while his health was already in decline. He was born in Albany, N.Y., on Sept. 2, 1946, the only child of Edna (née Gross) and Julius Earl Fox. Young Mike was a ham who enjoyed laughter and jokes with his cousins during family gatherings. He stayed busy with extracurriculars from Boy Scouts to football to theater. Science fiction fired his imagination. He read any comic books he could get his hands on and was very likely among the first Trekkies. He served in the US Army, the US Navy, and Civil Air Patrol.
Mike was a lifelong learner. He studied Microbiology and Criminal Justice in college. On his own, Mike delved into a broad range of topics including history, world religions, politics, and science. He was a dogged Democrat and took pride in civic engagement.
He was a cantankerous old man before he was truly old. He was possessed of a boisterous voice that carried far, in anger and mirth, and his acerbic attitude was matched only by his good intentions. His earlier interests expanded to embrace table-top gaming, collecting, and stories of all kinds. He adored all animals, but especially cats.
He is survived by his three children: Fiona (Zack) Dudley, SummerSong Fox, and Talen (Amber) Johnson Fox. In line with his wishes, memorials can be made to Congregation B’nai Israel in Little Rock, AR, and First Assembly of God in North Little Rock, AR.
Arrangements are entrusted to A Natural State Funeral Service, 2620 West Main Street, Jacksonville, Arkansas 72076. 501-982-3400
