Virginia Jean (Fortner) Barrett, age 79

Virginia Jean (Fortner) Barrett passed away at her residence in Mabelvale, Arkansas on April 28, 2023. Virginia was born in Binghamton, New York on October 8, 1943 to Lisle and Harriet Fortner.

Virginia and her husband Joe primarily raised their children in El Paso, Texas where she coached Bobby Sox Softball for many years. Virginia was a Licensed Vocational Nurse and later a Registered Nurse. She worked at Tigua General Hospital and for multiple doctors. After retiring, she and her daughter Cheryl moved to Alabama in 2005 before her final move to Mabelvale, Arkansas where she resided since 2012.

Virginia is survived by her son Staff Sergeant (USA, Ret) Bob Barrett and wife Callie of Mabelvale, Arkansas; her son Colonel (USAF, Ret) Steve Barrett and wife Diana of El Paso, Texas; her daughter Cheryl Barrett of Mabelvale, Arkansas; her brother Milton Fortner of Windsor, New York; her nephew Tim Meade and wife Jill of Bernville, Pennsylvania; her grandsons Robert Barrett II, Sergeant (ARNG) Michael Barrett, and James Barrett; her granddaughters Marsha Ann and Captain (USAR) Amanda Copland; as well as 6 great-grandchildren and other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Virginia is preceded in death by her husband Joseph Barrett and her son Joseph (Joe Joe) Barrett Jr, as well as both her parents and her brothers Clarence Fortner, Larry Meade, Claire Dayton, John Meade, Frank Fortner, Lyle Meade, and Barry Fortner.

A memorial service will be held at A Natural State Funeral Service in Jacksonville, Arkansas at 1:00pm on Monday, May 8, 2023.

    Thankful that I had the opportunity to meet this special lady. She was so bright, happy and full of love. My thoughts and prayers are with Callie, Bob and the family. I am so sorry for your loss.
