Heaven is a little brighter because a good and caring man left this earth on September 18, 2024.
Larry Joe Smith is survived by his very devoted wife of 49 years, Darla Welch Smith, his two sons, Joseph (Lisa) and Jade (Amy), 8 grandchildren (Steven (Leann), Gus, Gunner, Georgia, Laklyn, Mia and Cam), one great grandchild (Alice), brother Eddie (Marla), sister Patty (Johnny) and a host of nieces and nephews who he treated like his own. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fitzhugh and Juanita Smith and a brother Don (Mary).
Larry will be remembered by those closest to him for his acceptance of family situations that weren’t always ideal. When life happened, he never wavered in his resolve to welcome an extra person or two into his home for very long periods of time. We all got to see or experience his love, commitment and tolerance of a different family dynamic than he probably signed up for. He always had a steady, quiet resolve to love those who needed extra care. Larry surely tired of extra people in his home from time to time, but he never showed it. He was a good and kind host to those who needed the care and love their home afforded.
God must have made the outdoors for Larry. He was most content when he could be outside. From working on their farm, to sitting on the porch drinking coffee to camping with his brother and sister, Larry found peace when he was enjoying nature. He had a real penchant for calming crying newborns by holding them and walking around outside, usually returning with a sweet sleeping baby on his big shoulder.
Known as Husband, Dad, Brother, Pappaw, Uncle or his nickname, Big L, this family is richer for having witnessed all the good that Larry modeled while on this earth. His example is one to be followed. He loved us well and we are richer for it.
A family-hosted memorial service will be held on Monday, September 23, 2024 at 11:00am at Beebe Church of Christ, 1906 West Center Street, Beebe, Arkansas. Visitation will be held one-hour prior to the service.
