Helping Families and Friends Honor Their Loved One

Kathleen Nan Andrew, age 86

Kathleen Nan Andrew passed away on Sunday, October 27th, at Greenbrier Nursing Home in Greenbrier, Arkansas.

Kay was born on September 23rd, 1938, to Thomas and Murial Ryan. She was the oldest of 2 children. She graduated from Lodi High School in 1957

Kay married her former husband, Rod Bakke in 1958, and they were blessed with three boys: Tom, Van and David. They all shared many lasting memories in Platteville, Wisconsin, centered around the boys but Kay was very active in her community as well. In fact, she was the first female representative to be elected to the Platteville City Council and served many years in that capacity.  Kay also helped create the new Senior Citizen center in Platteville to provide daytime care and activities for the elderly in need of connection. Although not much of a sports fan, Kay attended many of her boys’ sporting or scholastic events and was simply an awesome Mom to her boys for her entire life.

Kay was very active with women’s initiatives as she worked for Dane County, WI – Displaced Homemakers Division from 1980-1982. Kay moved to Little Rock in 1982 where she worked for the Pulaski County Vocational School Single Parent Homemakers program from 1982-1991.  Kay also served on the Advisory Board of the Arkansas Insurance Commission from 1990 to 2000.

In 1985, Kay married Charles Andrew and resided in Little Rock for several years and then moved to Mountain View, Arkansas where they lived the “Country Life” for more than a decade.  Kay and Charlie loved living in the woods and enjoyed nature and they “adopted” many a stray dog that would join the family. Kay enjoyed raising chickens and loved getting fresh eggs every morning.  Kay was an amazing cook and Granny’s recipes have blessed many a family members table over the years.

Kay and Charlie moved back to Conway in 2010 where they could be closer to family and friends.  She also, was

and advocate for animals and helped raise funds to build an animal shelter in Conway area.  Also, Kay would frequently be organizing and volunteering at spaying and neutering events on a regular basis.

Those family members surviving Kay are: Sons Tom (Sumako) of Greenbrier, Arkansas, their daughter Yumeko Jenkins, New York City, Van (Alisha) of Bentonville Arkansas, their children Matthew Bakke (Ashleigh) Stillwater, OK and Melissa Pankey (Josh) Fayetteville, AR, David Bakke (Alana) of Maumelle, Arkansas, and their children Tyler and Logan Maumelle, AR, Great Grandchildren Finnley and Ari,  Andy Andrew, Atlanta, Georgia, Step-Son, Rex Andrew-Deceased, Grandson, Johnathon. Brother David Ryan (Karen) of Madison, Wisconsin, their children Kris Faus and Dan Ryan. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Charles Andrew, father, Thomas Ryan, mother, Murial Ryan, and her late husband, Rod Bakke, Dubuque, Iowa.

Kay will be missed by so many people who loved her and we will cherish the long visits, home cooked meals and many phone conversations with her family and many friends across the country where she would tell of her daily adventures in Arkansas. To honor Kay, please always remember to donate or volunteer at your local animal shelter to help all of her lost “fur” kids in need of love and attention as that would please her so very much.

Kay was very kind to me even when I had the chance to talk with her while she was divorced from my brother. She bought my eighth grade graduation dress with matching shoes. That was a very special gift for me. I live with her and my brother in Lodi during my senior year in high school.
    A wonderful lady for sure.

Kay was a dear friend of over 35 years. We shared our love of cooking, baking, canning, entertaining, family and fur babies, Sam, Emily, Holly, Jack and so many more. She even had a silkie chicken named Mary Jane. I loved visiting her and Charlie in Mtn View and was so happy when they moved to Conway. Always such a treat to be invited to meals and special occasions with her family. Kay will be missed.

I must admit that I did not anticipate to grow to love my stepmom Kay Andrew as I did,as she was not my natural mom,but turned out to be my second mom. Married to my dad Charles Andrew in Arkansas for many years, she was a fine Christian lady who only showed me love and care for a long time. Kay was so knowledgeable about so many things including currents events, politics, healthcare, and cooking,as she was a wonderful cook. I spent many wonderful Christmases at her house along with my dad,and Kay’s entire family. She really knew how to throw a party and family get together for any occasion. She always had a great love for her pets and furry animals giving them gifts for Christmas too. We will love and miss you Kay,and now you are no longer enduring your health problems while you were here. We will miss you a lot.
