Sergeant Robert G. Wolosonowich, a highly decorated Marine Corps veteran and former prisoner of war, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2024, at the age of 74, surrounded by his wife and daughter.
Born on February 22,1950, in Flint, Michigan, a current resident of Sherwood, Arkansas, Rob grew up with a deep sense of duty and honor. He joined the Marine Corps at 17, driven by a passion to serve his country. His commitment to his country was unwavering, and he quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and bravery. He served multiple tours in Vietnam, where he earned numerous commendations, including the Purple Heart. His heroism and tactical acumen were put to the ultimate test when he was captured during a reconnaissance mission. He endured the hardships of captivity as a POW, showing remarkable resilience and fortitude. His experiences during this time only strengthened his resolve and dedication to his fellow Marines.
Beyond his military achievements, Rob was a devoted family man. When it came to his grandchildren his love knew no boundaries. He didn’t just offer them love and protection; he genuinely engaged with them, playing alongside them as if they were his peers. He cultivated deep-rooted relationships with each grandchild throughout their lives. He educated them about war, shared numerous stories from his time in Vietnam, and told many amusing tales. He was their funny grandpa/poopa, seeing each grandchild as his cool best friend!
He is survived by his beloved wife, Alma, their three children; Robert, Tiffny (Victor Rohner), Karrie (John Young), eight grandchildren; Timothy, Adam, Chloe Jones; Andrew Wolosonowich, Myla (Robert Bottoms), Meg Wolosonowich, Austin and Blake Young and two great-grandchildren, all of whom were the center of his world. Rob was known for his generosity, sense of humor, and the unwavering support he provided to his family and friends. He is survived by three sisters; Valarie, Mari, and Kimberly and one brother; Rodney (Chet). He is proceeded in death by both parents, Rodney and Zelma, along with two brothers: Dennis and James.
The family will hold a private life celebration in honor of him. A burial service will be held in Arlington, Virginia, with military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) or the POW/MIA Foundation in Sergeant Robert Wolosonowich’s name.
Rest in peace, Sergeant Robert G. Wolosonowich. Your bravery and dedication to freedom will always be remembered, and you will be deeply missed by everyone who knew you. We are eternally grateful for your sacrifices in defending our liberties. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
