Mary Elizabeth Godfrey-Pollock passed away suddenly on January 4, 2025. She was born on May 14, 1942, in South Carolina to Tharo “Bud” and Myrtle Elizabeth (Collins) Godfrey, reaching the age of 82.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Phillip Pollock; her daughter, Shannon Whelan DeVega (Charles); and two brothers, Paul W. Godfrey (Betty) and Lee P. Godfrey (Sandy); several grandchildren, nieces, and a nephew. She was also cherished by many friends who were like family to her, including Barb Tronco Fowler.
Mary graduated from Spartanburg High School and further pursued her education at the University of Florida and Appalachian State University. In 1969, she moved to New Jersey. She dedicated 34 years of her life to teaching music in public schools across three states, retiring from Southampton Township School in Vincentown, NJ, in 2001. After retirement, she relocated to Arkansas.
Mary’s passion for music extended beyond the classroom; she taught private lessons in piano, voice, and numerous other instruments. She was renowned for her recitals, where she celebrated her students’ achievements, often hosting gatherings at her home. For many of her students, she was a mentor and friend long after lessons concluded.
A talented singer and musician herself, Mary also had a love for art and once harbored dreams of becoming an actress but found her true calling in inspiring others through music. She was an ardent animal lover, having cherished many pets over the years, and had a special appreciation for Native American art.
Mary was described as a candle that shared her light, igniting the passions of countless others. She lived her life fully and on her own terms, leaving behind a legacy of love, music, and kindness.
In honor of Mary, her former music students are encouraged to perform a piece of music in her memory, either privately or by sharing a link. All those whose lives she touched are invited to share their memories of her in the guest book.
May her light continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew her.
