Edwardo Vargas Castro
January 31, 1952 – June 30, 2025
Edwardo “Eddie” Vargas Castro, a proud U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, after a long fight with cancer. He was 73 years old.
Born on January 31, 1952, in Lovington, New Mexico, Eddie was the son of late Mary Treviño. Eddie was also blessed with the love of his late adoptive aunt, Ofilia Vargas, whose daughters—Linda Garza Flores and Lily Garza—became not only his cousins, but also sisters in heart and spirit.
Eddie is survived by his daughters, Amber Castro and Jessica (Kyle) Schoenhals; his grandchildren, Mikey Alan Castro, Corwyn “Nate” Duvall, and Howie and Teddy Schoenhals; as well as brothers George (Margaret) Rodriguez, Martin (Olga) Rodriguez, David (Gloria) Rodriguez, Thomas (Dona) Rodriguez, Albert Rodriguez, and Richard (Deborah) Rodriguez and sisters Rose (Jaime) Espinoza, Terry (Genaro) Lozano, and Irene (Aurelio) Gonzales.
Eddie leaves behind a legacy of resilience, kindness, and was a good friend to many. He was a man who found joy in the little things—a warm conversation, a well-timed joke, a favorite song—and helped others whenever he could.
Details of memorial services will be announced by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Eddie’s memory to a veterans’ organization of your choice.
