Helping Families and Friends Honor Their Loved One

Joseph England Dooley Matthews, 58, of Little Rock, died on November 6, 2025. Joseph “Jed” Mathews was born on July 4, 1967, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Justin Matthews III and Elizabeth “Betty” Cochran Matthews.

Joseph studied technical construction modalities and built a career as a construction project manager. in Los Angeles. His work ethic, intelligence, and tenacity were matched only by his compassion and generosity toward others.

A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Joseph found joy in canyoneering, snowboarding, kayaking, and biking. He approached every adventure with enthusiasm and a sense of wonder. He was also a devoted music lover and a gifted percussionist. After moving to California in the 1990s, he immersed himself in the local music scene, performing with several bands. He later reunited musically with old Arkansas friends in Hollywood, playing with the band Mojo Depot. His contagious smile could always be found wherever the music was loudest.

Joseph built and cherished a wide, vibrant community of friends, each with their own unique and unforgettable memories of him. He cared deeply for his circle of family and companions and nurtured those relationships throughout his life. His passion for travel led him to adventures around the world, including scuba diving in Thailand and rock climbing in Joshua Tree—experiences he treasured and often shared with stories and laughter.

Joseph is survived by his sister Alice “Lisa” Matthews of New York and his brother Hal (Vicki) Matthews of North Little Rock. He was preceded in death by his father, Justin Matthews III, his mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Cochran Matthews, and his brothers Justin Somers Matthews and David Matthews.

A gathering for Joseph’s friends and family will be held at a later date.

    Hal and Lisa
I am saddened to read about Jed’s death. You both are part of my childhood and I know you have great memories, as I do, of our days together in the neighborhood. Love you both. Take care.
