He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1965. He served as a Security Policeman for his first four years and as a Loadmaster for the rest of his career. After his retirement he then dedicated his life to serving Veterans at VFW Post 4548 in Jacksonville, Arkansas. He served on various committees, including over 20 years on the House Committee. He volunteered for every function held at the Post and was instrumental in setting up several volunteer programs such as Adopt A Highway, Kids Fishing Derby and the Post Christmas Basket Program that benefits needy families in the local community. He kept track of all Post Life Members and Deceased Life Members names and made sure the nameplate boards were maintained and easily accessible. He cared for the 3200 flags that the VFW places on the graves of deceased veterans for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. He made repairs to the Post Home, performed other maintenance and kept everything picked up and clean to ensure a quality environment for all veterans and their families. He faithfully read them all. He could finish a book in a day or two depending on what he had on his schedule. He had a wickedly fun sense of humor. He loved to share jokes, play practical jokes and for years passed out cards with funny jokes on them to everyone he met.
