John Charles Mooney Jr., age 63, of El Dorado, Arkansas passed away on Sunday July 5, 2026. He was born on September 16, 1962 in Bossier City, Louisiana.
He was a proud graduate of Arkansas State University, where he earned a degree in Criminal Psychology and was an active member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Throughout his professional life, John was known for his integrity, leadership, and unwavering work ethic. He served as a Federal Officer and after retiring he worked for the U.S. Marshal’s Service, and later used his talents as a private investigator. He was respected by colleagues and friends alike.
John found his greatest joy outdoors. Whether he was in a duck blind or on a deer stand before sunrise, casting a line on the water, or simply enjoying God’s creation, he was happiest surrounded by nature and family. He was lifelong member of the Williams Hunting Club at Moro Bay, Arkansas. He was a passionate conservationist and dedicated volunteer with Ducks Unlimited, faithfully serving as District Chairman and giving countless hours to preserving wildlife habitats for future generations. He was a member of College Ave. Church of Christ and served on the Security Team and as a Family Greeter. He also served as security for Celebrate Recover.
Above all else, John loved his family. His greatest pride was being a husband, father, and grandfather. He led with strength, offered steady encouragement, and loved unconditionally. His wisdom, generosity, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know him.
John was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clyde & Carra Waugh and his father John Charles Mooney Sr., step father Johnny Cupples, mother-in-law Dorithy J. McGarity DDS.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Robin Mooney; his children, Trey Mooney (Brittnay), Richard Mooney, Daniel Hayes (Amber), and Sydney Sandoval (Derrick), all of El Dorado; his mother Gayle Cupples, a brother Allen Higginbotham (Sheray) their children Ben (Katie) and Morgan (John) Gray and Jonathan, a sister Gay Gasaway (Barry) their son Kelle, his treasured grandchildren, Murphy Jade Mooney, Saxon Sandoval, Kellen Sandoval, Sawyer Urrey, and God daughter Madison Stewart, who knew him as their pop pop. Father-in-Law Carroll McGarity, along with many extended family members, lifelong friends, and all whose lives were made better by knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hope Landing or to Arkansas Ducks Unlimited in John’s memory, honoring his lifelong passion for conservation and the outdoors.
His legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the family he loved, and the outdoors he worked so hard to preserve.
A Family hosted memorial will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 11 am at College Avenue Church of Christ, 1817 North College Avenue, El Dorado, Arkansas, 71730.

I am saddened to hear of John’s passing. I worked with him for 15 years in the Western District of Arkansas and found him easy to be around and very personable. John has the right balance of law and order and compassion, with a deep understanding of human failings. On the job he treated those he was responsible for with dignity and respect. His mission completed now, he leaves a legacy of duty and service well done, for which his family and friends can be proud.
