James W. Joyner, 77, from Sherwood passed away peacefully on September 8, 2026. He was born on April 30, 1949 to James W. (Sr.) and Ruth Joyner. James enjoyed a close bond with his father who constantly challenged him to embrace independent thought, critical thinking skills that were invaluable during his 35 year career as the Production Manager for the IT department at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. James’ accomplishments were many, his knowledge vast, his personality quiet yet infectious, factors resulting in countless nominations for the departments’ coveted Employee of the Month award. James also possessed a deep, abiding love of country, a patriotic spirit and a desire to serve the country he so loved, for 6 years in the US Army Reserves. He also championed the country’s most important right – the ability of a citizen to make a difference at the ballot box! He believed in the political process, he campaigned for various candidates, including his dad at an early age! His political savvy was recognized and earned him respect of party leadership. James loved playing poker with other managers that he worked with at UAMS. When he received a good hand the whole table knew because his face would turn beet red!
He was preceded in death by his parents James and Ruth Joyner, and brother Ted Joyner.
He is survived by his wife, Jalene, of 28 years, JJ who was always by his side and LOVED his Dad! Mother and Father In-laws Patricia and Jay Hawk of Sherwood. His brother Terrell and wife Pat and their children Michael and Kayla from San Antonio, Texas, and three children Trina, Trevor and Tammy.
The family would like to express a great deal of gratitude to Life Touch Health (Arkansas Hospice). There were many individuals that assisted James but he was especially appreciative of Victoria and Joan (his nurses), Keisha and Ashley (his CNAs), Gary the Chaplain and Deborah his social worker.
A Celebration of Life will happen at a later date.
